Helmer's father was part of the Galactic Republic. He believed in his duty to his home world, to his people, and the government that served them. He died during the war with the Empire. Helmer was given the opportunity to swear fealty to Emperor Fel. He took the offer and saw it as a chance to continue serving the people.
He had little problems serving Emperor Fel. After all, the general ideals of the Republic and Empire were not that different from one another, at least in Helmer's eyes. But the Sith. The Sith were a different matter altogether. He had contemplated joining up with Fel's Empire if he could have, but he decided that he needed to stay where he was and try to continue to follow the sense of Alderaanean duty that his father had instilled in him.
Over the years, his service to the Sith has eaten away at him, sending him spiralling into a greater dislike of himself and everything in his life. The Colonel over the last couple of years as become an alcohollic and has spent several hours looking at old pictures contemplating ending his life.
