Mallin Zult's parents were hunted down for the bounty on their heads. The thing of it was that there was no mention of a new born baby. So his parents were taken in, and he was not. Hurin Zult, the Gand that killed his parents, took him as his own son, treated him as if he was is own flesh and bone and trained him as if he was Gand.

In fact, Mallin Zult was an exceptional Findsman. It is because of this that he was found by the Sith. Darth Halovik gave him the option of becoming his apprentice or death. Mallin, being ever practical, chose to become Halovik's apprentice.
